The Design Drawings Damage Atlas is a resource for recognising and classifying damage to architectural drawings and provides information on depot management and preservation. The damage atlas is based on the collection of the Nieuwe Instituut and uses images and text to illustrate the variety of materials, techniques, traces of use and damage in architectural archives. Additionally, the damage atlas provides insight into the process of creation and usage of the drawings and their specific characteristics.
The Design Drawings Damage Atlas is the result of years of research into the collection and was created with a view to increasing the visibility of the highly diverse collection from the perspective of the material itself. Knowledge about materials and techniques and how they relate to restoration and conservation practices will also contribute to knowledge about architecture and architectural practices. Research into various reproduction techniques, such as blueprints and whiteprints, for instance, has improved our understanding of how architects shaped the design process and communicated with clients and contractors.
The Design Drawings Damage Atlas is the result of a collaboration between Metamorfoze and the Nieuwe Instituut.
You can order the Design Drawings Damage Atlas for free. The Atlas can also be viewed online as a PDF.
