Safely Packed - Packaging Manual for the Preservation of Archives and Collections

The manual provides as complete an overview as possible of what is involved in the proper and safe packing of archival and library materials.

You can read about the packing basics. What requirements packing must meet and how can you prepare an archive for packing? It contains instructions for (among other things) folding a cover and removing staples. You can also read about what agreements you need to make within your institution so that everyone packs in the same way.

There is attention for special document formats that do not fit in the standard-sized archive box. This ranges from large registers to charters and photographic materials. We describe how best to pack this type of material.

You can also find instructions. Starting with an explanation of basic techniques such as folding and cutting, which are important techniques to master for proper packing. You will also find descriptions of specific types of packing.

Safely Packed, Packaging Manual for the Preservation of Archives and Collections is a National Archives initiative in collaboration with Metamorfoze.
